Quick answer

Why is my Sub-Zero freezer not freezing?

Sub-Zero keeps the freezer's cooling separate from the fresh-food side, so the freezer can warm up on its own. Most cases trace to the defrost system, the evaporator fan, a loaded condenser or a drawer gasket, and typical repairs run $300 to $850. Sealed-system work runs $1,200 to $2,500. The $179 diagnostic comes off the repair.

  • Side-by-side, over-and-under, drawer and column freezers
  • Sealed-system work done in-house
  • Same-day service available

What People Tell Us When They Call

  • "Ice cream is soft and the meat isn't frozen solid."
  • "Frost is building up on the back wall of the freezer drawer."
  • "The fridge side is cold. Only the freezer is warm."
  • "There's water or a sheet of ice on the freezer floor."
  • "It's louder than usual, almost a scraping fan sound."
  • "The ice maker stopped making ice."
  • "The freezer drawer won't pull itself shut anymore."
  • "The high-temp alarm keeps going off at night."

Food First, Then the Fix

A freezer at 15°F instead of 0°F won't spoil food overnight, but it will soften ice cream, frost-burn meat and stress the compressor in a hot kitchen. When you book, tell us what the freezer is doing and how full it is. Our tech arrives in your window, finds the cause and gives you one price before touching anything.

Why a Sub-Zero Freezer Stops Freezing

One side can fail on its own. Sub-Zero's dual-refrigeration design keeps the freezer's cooling separate from the fresh-food side. That's great for food, and it's also why a freezer can warm up while the fridge above it runs perfectly. A warm freezer with a cold fridge points us to the freezer's own fan, defrost system or cooling circuit.

Defrost system. The freezer melts its own frost on a timer using a heater, a sensor and a drain. When one of those fails, frost keeps building on the evaporator until air can't pass through it. Frost on the back wall, a puddle that refreezes on the floor, or a freezer that slowly warms over a few days are the classic signs.

Evaporator fan. The fan moves cold air from the coil into the compartment. Worn bearings or a motor iced in place stop that airflow. A scraping or chirping sound from the freezer is often this fan.

Condenser and condenser fan. Built-ins shed their heat through a condenser at the top or bottom of the unit. Fine Las Vegas dust packs into it, and summer kitchens with big glass and afternoon sun run hot. A loaded condenser makes the whole system run longer and warmer, and the freezer shows it first.

Drawer gaskets and closers. Dry desert air hardens rubber gaskets over the years, and heavy, full freezer drawers wear rollers and closers. A drawer that doesn't seal lets warm air in, which turns into frost on the coil and soft food on the shelves, especially in humid monsoon weeks.

Sealed system. Less often, the cause is the compressor, the evaporator or a refrigerant leak. Our tech handles sealed-system work on Sub-Zero in-house, so you don't wait for a second company to come out.

What Sub-Zero Freezer Repairs Typically Cost

Typical ranges, depending on the unit and the repair. These are not quotes.

  • Fan motor, defrost part or sensor: $350–$850
  • Door gasket, hinge or closer: $300–$700
  • Ice maker replacement: $450–$850
  • Control board: $500–$1,100
  • Sealed system (compressor, evaporator, refrigerant): $1,200–$2,500

Your exact price is set after the $179 diagnostic, and you approve it before any work starts.

Repair or replace?

For most Sub-Zero freezers, repair wins easily. A defrost part, a fan or a gasket costs a fraction of a new built-in, and a replacement usually means panel and cabinet work on top. A sealed-system repair is the bigger decision: on a unit that's otherwise in good shape it's still usually worth it, and on a very old one we lay out both options with real numbers before you choose.

FAQ

Sub-Zero Freezer Repair FAQ

Are you factory authorized?

No. Tuffix Pro is an independent repair service, not affiliated with Sub-Zero or its parent company, Sub-Zero Group.

My fridge side is cold but the freezer isn't. Why?

Sub-Zero keeps the freezer's cooling separate, so the freezer's own fan, defrost system or cooling circuit can fail while the fridge keeps working. The diagnostic pins down which one.

Is a frosted-over freezer a big repair?

Usually not. Heavy frost on the back wall most often points to the defrost system, which sits in the mid range of our price table.

Do you repair the sealed system on Sub-Zero freezers?

Yes. Compressor, evaporator and refrigerant work are done in-house by our tech.

Do you work on freezer drawers and all-freezer columns?

Yes. Side-by-side, over-and-under, drawer and integrated column freezers.

How soon can someone come out?

You pick an arrival window when you book. If we're late for that confirmed window, the diagnostic is free.
