Likely Causes

Cold air isn't reaching the fridge side

In most modern fridges, cold air is made in the freezer and blown into the fridge. If the freezer is cold but the fridge is warm, the usual suspects are a stopped evaporator fan or frost blocking the air path.

The defrost system failed

Frost slowly builds up on the freezer coils. A failed defrost heater, sensor or control lets it pile up until airflow stops. A thick frost layer on the back freezer wall is the giveaway.

The condenser can't shed heat

The condenser releases heat into your kitchen. If its coils are packed with dust or the condenser fan has stopped, the fridge runs constantly and still runs warm. Las Vegas heat makes this worse, especially in garages.

Start components or the compressor

If the fridge clicks on and off, hums without running, or everything is warm, the problem may be in the start components or the compressor itself.

Safe Checks Before You Call

These are quick, safe checks. They aren't repairs, and we don't recommend opening up the appliance yourself.

• Check the temperature setting. It's easy to bump it.
• Make sure food isn't blocking the air vents inside.
• Close the door on a dollar bill. If it slides out easily, the gasket may not be sealing.
• Give the fridge a few inches of space behind and above it so it can breathe.

When to call

Call if the fridge is above 40°F for more than a few hours, if you see heavy frost on the freezer's back wall, or if it's running nonstop and still warm. Food safety comes first, so move perishables to a cooler.
