Front-Load Washer Leaking? Start With the Door Gasket
When a front-loader leaves water on the floor, the rubber door gasket is the first thing our techs check. Here's why it fails, how to check it yourself, and when it needs replacing.

The short answer
On a front-load washer, the door gasket (the rubber boot between the door and the drum) is the most common place a leak starts. It tears, wears thin or traps debris, and then water gets past it during the wash. If the water shows up at the front, under the door, look at the gasket first.
Why door gaskets wear out
- Things left in pockets. Coins, keys, bobby pins and underwire collect in the folds of the gasket and cut the rubber over time.
- Residue and standing water. Detergent, fabric softener and water sit in the folds after every load. That feeds mold and mildew, which stains the rubber and makes it smell. Over time the folds stiffen and crack.
- Hard water. Las Vegas water is hard. Mineral deposits build up in the folds and hold on to even more residue.
- Too much detergent. Front-loaders are built for HE detergent in small amounts. Extra suds can push water where it shouldn't go.
- Overloading. A packed drum presses clothes against the door and the gasket on every spin.
- Age. Rubber hardens as it ages, and a hard gasket doesn't seal as well.
How to check your gasket
- Turn the washer off and open the door.
- Fold the gasket back and work all the way around it. Look hardest at the bottom, where water sits.
- Look for tears, holes, splits and cracks. Pull out anything caught in the folds.
- Wipe away the grime. If black spots stay after cleaning, the mold is in the rubber, not on it.
- Dry the floor, run a short rinse with the drum empty, and watch the front bottom of the machine with a flashlight.
Make sure it's really the gasket
A few other parts leak in the same general area, and it's worth ruling them out before buying a gasket:
- The drain pump filter cap at the bottom front isn't fully closed.
- A fill hose or drain hose at the back is loose or worn.
- The detergent drawer is clogged and overflowing.
- Water from the back or underneath, together with a loud spin, can point to the tub seal and bearings. That's a bigger repair.
If your washer also isn't draining, see washer not draining. A full drum can leak from places that are dry when it drains properly.
When to replace the gasket
Replace it if there's any tear or hole, if the rubber is cracked or hard, or if mold keeps coming back after cleaning. A torn gasket doesn't get better, and the water it lets out ends up under the machine, where it can damage the floor long before anyone notices.
On many models, replacing the gasket means taking off the front panel and the clamp rings that hold it. If that's more than you want to take on, our tech can do it. The visit starts with the $89 diagnostic, which comes off the repair if you go ahead, and you approve one flat price before any work starts.
Keep the new one lasting
- Wipe the gasket dry after the last load of the day.
- Leave the door open a crack so the drum can dry out.
- Use HE detergent, and less of it than the cap suggests.
- Check pockets before every load.
- Run the washer's cleaning cycle once a month.
Questions
Why is my front-load washer leaking from the bottom front?
The door gasket is the most common cause. Other possibilities are a loose drain pump filter cap or a clogged detergent drawer. Check the gasket first.
Can a moldy gasket be cleaned instead of replaced?
Surface mold usually cleans off. If the black spots stay after cleaning, or the rubber is cracked or torn, replace the gasket.
How much does it cost to have a tech look at it?
The diagnostic is $89 and comes off the repair if you go ahead. You get one flat price before any work starts, and same-day service is available.
