Dryer Fire Risk: Why Vent Cleaning Isn't Enough

A clean vent matters. But lint also builds up inside the dryer itself, near the heat source, where vent cleaning never reaches. Here's what our techs see when they open dryers in Las Vegas homes.

The short answer

Lint is flammable, and it doesn't stay in the vent. It gets inside the dryer cabinet and collects around the heating element or gas burner, the drum seals and the blower. Vent cleaning doesn't touch any of that. The dryer itself needs to be opened and cleaned as part of regular maintenance.

That doesn't mean the vent is safe to ignore. Lint in the vent is a fire risk too, and a restricted vent makes the dryer run hotter. You want both clean.

What we see inside dryers

When our techs open a dryer for a repair, lint packed inside the cabinet is a common find, often right around the heater or burner. Cleaning the lint screen every load and the vent once in a while doesn't touch it.

How lint gets inside the dryer

  • Around the lint screen housing, when the screen or its seal doesn't fit tight.
  • Past worn drum seals and felt at the front and back of the drum.
  • Through gaps in the internal ducting and the blower housing.
  • Faster when the vent is restricted, because air that can't get out finds other paths.

Warning signs

  • Clothes take two cycles to dry.
  • The top or sides of the dryer feel hotter than usual.
  • A burning or hot-dust smell while it runs.
  • The dryer runs but stopped heating. A blown thermal fuse is a safety device doing its job, and it usually has a cause behind it. See dryer not heating.
  • Lint showing up around the door or under the machine.

If you smell burning, stop the dryer, unplug it (or shut off the gas) and don't use it until it's been checked.

What dryer maintenance includes

  1. Power off at the plug or breaker, and the gas valve closed on a gas dryer.
  2. Open the cabinet and vacuum lint from around the heater or burner, the drum, the blower and the base.
  3. Check the drum seals and felt for wear.
  4. Check the thermal fuse and thermostats.
  5. Check the vent connection at the back of the dryer.
  6. Close it up and run it to confirm it heats and cycles correctly.

What you can do between visits

  • Clean the lint screen before every load.
  • Wash the screen with warm soapy water now and then. Dryer sheet residue can clog it even when it looks clean.
  • Keep the area behind and around the dryer clear.
  • Check the vent hood outside. The flap should open when the dryer runs.
  • Don't run the dryer when nobody is home or everyone is asleep.

Booking dryer maintenance

Book a visit and mention that you want the dryer opened and cleaned. The visit starts with the $89 diagnostic, which comes off the work if you go ahead, and you approve one flat price before anything starts. A washer on the same visit is +$49.

FAQ

Questions

Is cleaning the dryer vent enough to prevent a fire?

It helps, but it isn't enough on its own. Lint also builds up inside the dryer near the heat source, and vent cleaning doesn't reach it. The dryer itself needs opening and cleaning.

Why did my dryer's thermal fuse blow?

The fuse cuts power to the heat when the dryer runs too hot. That usually points to restricted airflow from lint inside the dryer or in the vent. Replacing the fuse without fixing the airflow means it blows again.

How much does dryer maintenance cost?

The visit starts with the $89 diagnostic, which comes off the work if you go ahead. You approve one flat price before anything starts.
